ABOUT MALAWI

Malawi "the warm heart of Africa" is half way between South Africa and Kenya.  A land locked country it is bordered by Tanzania in the North and East, Zambia to the North West and Mozambique to the South, East and West. Malawi is mountainous with high plateau's  lakes and flood plains these features give it its physical character, it forms the southern end of the African rift lake valley. 

The highlands of Malawi are cool, malaria free and often protected areas where you have wonderful views, wildlife and varied habitat. The combination of mountainous landscapes and lakes merged with the colours and scenery of Africa make Malawi a wonderful holiday experience.  

Lake Malawi "the lake of stars" comprises about a fifth of the countries land mass, and stretches through most of its' Eastern border's The lake is fresh water and has around 700 - 800 species of fish found nowhere else in the world. With long stretches of golden beaches clear water and beautifully set lodges it goes hand in hand with an African safari and adventure experience.

How to get there: (By plane)

Most flights from Europe and other parts of Africa will use Lilongwe International Airport, although there are a few flights to/from Blantyre. Regional destinations with direct flights to/from Malawi include:

  • Harare (Zimbabwe)

  • Nairobi (Kenya)

  • Lusaka (Zambia)

  • Johannesburg (South Africa)

  • Dar es Salaam (Tanzania)

  • Maputo (Mozambique)

There are daily flights to and from Nairobi from Tuesdays to Sundays, where you can obtain connections to the main cities in Europe.  You can also get connections to major cities in the United States, Australia and Europe from Johannesburg International Airport.

By Train:

The train is considered to be the best mode of transport between Malawi and Northern Mozambique.  The trains run twice a week from Nampula and Cuamba, although there are bus routes between Malawi and Mozambique, which include Nsanje and villa de Sena, just south of the Zambezi river.

By Road:

The only land crossing between Malawi and Tanzania is at the Songwe river bridge, North of Kaporo, in the far north western tip of the country, where you can get a bus twice a day.  The main crossing between Malawi and Zambia is about 30km East of Chipata, on the main road between Lilongwe and Lusaka.

 All crossing points between countries bordering Malawi open between 6:00 - 18:00 daily.
